Jul 23, 2011 Block Island Sound
We are on our way to Block Island for the first time. The Sound was smooth with hardly any Atlantic swell.  Amazing, after all the horror stories we heard.

In this photo we are in line to make the turn on the first buoy into the Great Salt Pond.

We were cruising with members of the Meriden Power Squadron.

There was lots of wild life at the Block Island Boat Basin where we stayed.
We were in slip A26 which was not so great.  Bulkhead (and all the traffic and noise) on the starboard side, and a big piling between our boat and the floating dock.

Big lesson, NEVER accept a slip next to the bulkhead.

Wendy settled in for an extended weekend of boat watching.
The Oar restaurant, right at the marina. Dining room, big deck with a bar, outdoor tables with umberellas, and chairs to sit out and watch the boats.

Bathrooms and showers are under the Oar.

"Oars" on the deck. MANY more are inside the dining room.
Saturday night and the first of many cocktail parties.
Lots of Viking tuna boats are here for the tournament next weekend.
Night time brought out the lights.  Our little garden lights look great next to our nieghbors under water lights.
A trip to Old Harbor by cab ($10 + $1 for the second passenger) and we made our first stop at the Historical Society Museum.
The moist sea air produces beautiful flowers everywhere on the island.
All the ferries come into Old Harbor. Not a pleasant moment on the top level of that high speed ferry as it backs into its own diesel exhaust.
Aldo's bakery in Old Harbor. They come to the Boat Basin every morning with coffee and pastries.  They also go out in a small boat to sell to the boats at moorings.
Tow boat US.  This was a BUSY guy.  The boat has bow and stern thrusters and slithers out of the slip.
Crabs were everywhere, to the delight of all the youngsters.  This striper carcass was a real treat.
Lots of pretty sunsets and evening clouds.
Walking the beach from Champlain's to the Boat Basin.
  Beach Plum
"Out of this World" party on Monday night.
Hmmm, maybe come back next year?
Jim took a Sail class with the Meriden Power Squadron.  The instructor took the class out for a sail!
We decided to close in the cockpit with a canvas "camper back".

Here the  1 1/4" stainless frame for the top is completed.

The canvas top is on. Shade!
Waiting for season's end maintenence at Deep River Marina
Here is a shot of the finished canvas. We were on the hard before the sides were finished.
View from the interior with the door and back canvas up.
