Jan 01 2009 Chester CT New Year's Day at the PYC. It is billed as a hot dog roast . . |
| . . but it is usually quite a feast! |
Jan 23 2009
Hay Haven Chester CT Angus McPhee and Nancy Ann wait for warmer days. |
Jan 31
2009 Chester Ct The night the locks are changed on the clubhouse. First we go to the Town Dock on Pattaconk Creek and listen to the ice crack. |
Mar 21 2009 Old Saybrook CT A sign of the bad economy, another store is lost. |
First party of the year. St. Patty's Day is a favorite with all. Leprachaun? |
Mar 28 2009
PYC Chester CT Jim & Pete are the only serious "Swampers" in the big swamp cleanup on the first work party day. |
Jun 08 2009 Ellington CT Work is well under way tearing down the old field stone chimney. Significant water damage shows behind the stone. |
Jun 13 2009
PYC Holly's Black Pearl took the honors at the annual blessing of the fleet. |
Jun 17 2009
Ellington CT The new chimney is slowly coming up. Lots of rainy days has slowed progress. |
| Meanwhile, Jim starts removing the old overhead portion of the deck. |
| Mystic Garden tour. This was a real treat. We got to walk through some really exceptional gardens in the homes across from Mystic Seaport. |
It was a real trip to be in the yards that we always looked over at from the seaport. Notice Mystic Seaport in the background. |
Jun 27 2009
Ellington CT The chimney is almost done. |
Jun 28 2009
PYC Chester CT Nancy decided to try a water garden at our slip this year. |
| We had a canvas cover made for the bow of the boat. Keeps some of the heat off the v-berth, and it allows the front hatch to stay open in a light rain. |
Jun 29 2009
Ellington CT The old kitchen is nearly cleaned out. Work starts soon! |
Jul 09 2009
Ellington CT A week and a half and the old kitchen is gone, re-wired, new lights, new plumbing. Ready for paint. |
| Outside, the chimney is finished, and the deck is ready for an overhaul. |
Jul 24 2009
Mystic CT Boating! Nancy Ann at the PYC Rendezvous in Mystic. |
| The Nichios settle in at the dinghy dock. |
The Amtrak Regional train glides by in the distance. Later in the summer, Nancy and I and our son James will take a day trip on this same line. |
| Picnic family style at Rendezvous. |
Jul 28 2009
Ellington CT Lots of progress cutting the size of the deck down and replacing the decking. A portion of the right side is left open for the Conservatory. "Patching" the siding has become quite a job! Work has started on cutting down our wonderful bamboo patch. Alas, it had become a maintenance nightmare. |
| The bamboo propagates like many other grasses, on runners. The runners are about 3 to 6 inches under the surface. When a clump gets established, it has a structure that is very difficult to remove, even with a long handled shovel. We hired a man with a Bobcat to tear out the roots. |
Jul 30 2009
Ellington CT The date is approximate, but sometime around the end of July we finally got the kitchen back. This photo is after we have moved back in for a while. |

Aug 05 2009
Freeport ME We took a trip up north to attend the Maine Boats, Homes and Harbors show in Rockland ME. First stop, the Desert of Maine in Freeport ME. Really cool, although not huge. Take the ride, it is worth it. |
Aug 06 2009 Rockland Maine. The Farnsworth museum is in Rockland. A must see for its collection of three generations of Wyeth paintings. |
| The Olson house. These children of a visitor are attempting to reproduce the look of Christina's World. |
| The real Christina's World. |
| Doreen and Abbey have all the show stickers. |
Aug 07 2009 Rockland Maine. The boat show is not huge, but has some very nice boats in the water as well as on the shore. Many beautiful handmade canoes, kayaks, etc. Since this is also a home show, there are many incredible handmade pieces of furniture. |
| This boat solves the problem of how to carry your dinghy. |
| Our previous boat (Rosborough from Nova Scotia) is represented at the show. Still looks the same, and they are still improving it with each boat they build. |
| After the show, a trip to Camden ME. The water runs under the street and cascades down the rocks into the harbor. |
Aug 08 2009 Thomaston ME. This is Montpelier, a reproduction of the house of Henry Knox. Revolutionary War artillery general. Re-enactors have camped on the lawn for the weekend. |
| These folks are feasting on lobster at Waterman Beach Lobster. This place was pretty cool. Great location , beautiful scenery. |
| The boat in the distance belongs to a nutty guy who brought two tables of guests ashore. They had a hell of a party, ate lobsters and other seafood until they were stuffed, then called in the dinghy and went back to the boat. |
| A local harbor just filled with the kind of boats we really like. |
Aug 09 2009 Brunswick ME We usually see this bridge in the winter, and it is not very tempting to stop and walk out on it. The Brunswick Topsham Swing Bridge was built to allow the folks in Topsham to get to work in Brunswick. It was built by Roebling, the same builder that built the Brooklyn Bridge. |
Aug 10 2009 Portsmouth NH We always stop in Portsmouth to see the waterfront, and in the summer the park is filled with flowers. We spotted this empty freighter headed slowly up river. |
| It turns out the freighter was headed for the wharf that the barque Eagle was occupying. |
| The Eagle left the wharf and headed downstream. Who knew we would find a friendly boat on this trip! |
Ellington CT Back home, and there is a Bobcat in the back yard, ready to go to work digging holes for the pilings for the Conservatory. |
Aug 11 2009 Ellington CT Sure enough, the crew showed up the next day and prepared the pilings for our new Conservatory. |
Aug 15 2009 Chester CT Almost boating! We enjoy a picnic with fellow PYC boaters in the club pavilion. |
Aug 17 2009
Ellington CT The helper seems to be talking to his fingers as the driver backs the conservatory onto the pilings. |
| Nancy inspects the finished product. |
Sep 04 2009
Coecles Harbor NY We took a trip to Coecles Harbor on Shelter Island, NY. To our surprise, our boating buddies Rich and Sherry (Angus McPhee) were already there! |
| We are quickly settled in with our own dinghy floating behind the boat. |
Sep 05 2009
Coecles Harbor NY Angus McPhee swings quietly on the mooring. |
| Sometimes the meals on board are quite simple. |
TRIP TO NEWPORT Sep 11 2009 Mystic CT On the way to Newport, we stopped in a beautiful cemetery in Mystic to snoop at the gravestones, and to see the exotic trees. (In Victorian times cemeteries were often planted with unusual tree varieties.) |
| Here is another unusual specimen. |
| As you would expect, there are lots of seamen in the Mystic Cemetery. |
Stonington CT At the end of the road in Stonington you will find a lighthouse museum. From the tower you can see Little Narragansett Bay (Napatree). |
| At a glass blower in Stonington they were making bottle stoppers. It is quite an art, you have to let the glass drip (flow) vertically, but not reach the floor. |
Sep 12 2009
Newport RI A large cruise ship was in the harbor, and they used their life boats to ferry the guests into Newport. |
| Nancy and Karen reach to save the child in the wave. |
| The Norwegian Dawn at anchor with a vintage 12 meter yacht passing astern. |
| 12 meter yachts "race" in the harbor. |
| Pete takes a photo for a tourist at the Tennis Hall of Fame. |
Sep 12 2009
Wickford RI The working boat fleet at Wickford. |
Sep 26 2009 Monument Beach MA High School mini reunion. Fisherman rides to a hot spot on the access road by the Cape Cod Canal. |
| Jim "tourists" with the railroad bridge in the background. |
| Kip, our host and ferry captain for the reunion weekend. |
| John took us for a nice ride on his sailboat. |
Sep 29 2009 Old Saybrook to Westerly and back, by train. Horrible picture through the Amtrak window of Niantic Bay as we cruise the rails toward Westerly. |
Stopped in New London. The lift section of the rail bridge is in the background, with the auto bridge behind it. |
Mystic River with Mystic Shipyard in the background. This was a great trip. It was interesting to see places from the train which we have previously watched the trains from the water. |
Oct 01 2009 Rocky Hill CT Oldest ferry in the US is at the crossing in Rocky Hill. |
Oct 04 2009 Old Lyme CT We spend the night at Old Lyme Marina to cool the engine off for end of the season maintenance. The marina is just off the CT River, and offers a new perspective on the auto bridge that we go under at the start of our trips. |
Nancy brought the car down, so we took a ride down the coast to Niantic. The outgoing tide kicks up quite a current at the RR bridge in Niantic. |
| Wendy watches the day ending on her last trip of the season. Is she planning next year's trips already? |
Oct 12 2009 Chester CT Granddaughter Eliza helps me pick up the gas receipts at the club. |
| Later, Nancy and Eliza enjoy a moment on a ride on the Steam Train from Essex. |
Oct 23 2009 Chester CT Nancy Ann joins her long time friend Angus McPhee on the hard at Hays Haven. |
