	A trip up the Hudson River was always a dream of ours.  It is a very satisfying experience.  The contrast between the city life and the quieter areas up river is amazing.  Throughout, there is an awareness of the importance of the river, both past and present. Navigation up the Hudson is very easy. For the most part, it is wide open from shore to shore.  The islands present most of the route choices, usually only one choice!  We travelled from Manhattan to Troy without any points in our chart plotter.  Following a good chart and watching where you are on the chart plotter is all that is needed. We used Maptech's folding waterproof chart "HUDSON RIVER New York City to Troy Lock". Try to find places to stay on the river where there is no wake action.  We did not see many large wakes, but they are very prevalent on the river, and do not stop at sundown.  Staying off the river, or anchoring behind the islands, is necessary for your sanity. Things get cheaper as you travel up river.  Stay that extra night, or buy fuel, as far north as possible if you are on a budget.

	Jun 21, 2007 Day 2 Milford CT to Port Washington NY DT 3.9 TF 50.7 Nice easy ride across Long Island Sound. I think Nancy is getting used to the boat.
	Even this far out, the city buildings slip into view.
	The Manhassett Bay Marina is located around a small hook in the harbor, and is very protected from wakes. No mistake that this is NY, prices jumped.
	NANCY ANN looks a little out of place in this pleasure boat marina.
	Alcohol is big around here.
	Diesel was more expensive here ($3.15 in Deep River CT and $2.99 up the Hudson).
	Jun 22, 2007 Day 3 Port Washington to Haverstraw NY DT 5.8  TF 87.7 Fueled up $2.99 diesel at Haverstraw Marina.
	Cruising under the bridges is facinating.
	Heading down the East River, there are many attractions at the river's edge.
	Towering masts are lost against the cityscape.
	The old Staten Island Ferry building had a lot of class.

	Tugs and barges were everywhere! You have to watch out for the water taxis. Keep a steady course and do not be surprised if they overtake you and cut across our bow in one motion. They will not hit you, but they won't wait for you either.
	You just have to take your own picture of the Statue of Liberty. Ellis Island and the Statue are accessible only by tour boat. It is VERY difficult to see both of them in the same day, partly because there is so much to see, and partly because it is hard to juggle the tour boat schedule. Both are interesting and well worth visiting.  If you arrive by boat, schedule a two night stay at Liberty Landing Marina. You can walk to the tour boat terminal, and are in perfect position to be a early bird.
	Security is "near airline" level at both sites. Carry as little as possible as you will be required to put almost everything is a locker in order to go in the Statue.  At the time, we could not go up into the body, but visited the base which has a nice museum in it. 	King Neptune collects the trash.  Not all boats navigate these waters successfully!

	Haverstraw Bay is very wide and has good wind for sailing.  There are lots of sailboats in this area.
	Jun 23, 2007 Day 4 Haverstraw NY to Kingston NY DT 5.0 hr TF 27.1 gal Lv 7:10 Av 11:52 Cruising through the Hudson River highlands is one of the most pleasurable portions of the trip.  The mountains are spectacular.
	Pollepel Island.  Once the home of the first large surplus arms merchant in the US.
	Rock quarries are common along the river. Stay far away from their docks or risk a nasty call on the radio
	Dry dock for barges.

	There is no doubt that Kingston welcomes boaters.
	Private tugs are not unusual on the river.

	Restaurants abound on Rondout Creek.
	This museum is well worth a visit.
	NANCY ANN tucked in at the Rondout Yacht Basin.  This marina is across the creek from the town of Kingston, so you need a dinghy to get to town, or use the local cabs, etc.

	Jun 24, 2007 Day 5 Layover in Kingston NY DT 0 hr  TF 27.1 gal  L'il Rip was busy moving barges up stream to the repair yard.
	The Rondout Creek snack bar has a good view of the creek activities. Look closely and you will see Chuck and Stephanie (who came to visit us) and Nancy.
	Jun 25, 2007 Day 6 Kingston NY to Troy and back to Coeyman's DT 6.3 hr  TF 70.7 gal Coeyman's where we will return to for the night.  Notice the stone dike that appears as the tide drops. (The Hudson is tidal to Albany).

	Notice that at high tide you can just barely see the dike in the water. Look just in front of the furled burgee on our bow and you can see the dike running to the right.

	When the tide is out, you can see the dike wall easily!  While the approach seems tight at first, there is ample room to maneuver and  everything is well marked.
	Jun 26, 2007 Day 7 Coeyman's NY to Kingston NY DT 4.5 hr  TF 92.0 gal  Filled tank 91.8 g @ $2.99 There are some estates and mansions that go back generations on the river, and there are some very nice new homes also.
	Keeping an eye out for the old lighthouses is fun. This is the Saugerties lighthouse.  You can find a lot about the lighthouses at Hudson Riverlights.
	The Blue Herons are pretty, but remember, they can fly!

	Things are quiet in the basin.
	Looking west on the creek.  The rail trestle is very busy.  Freight trains seem to run on the west side of the river, and passenger trains on the east side.  We never got tired of seeing the trains wind along the river bank. Seeing them cross this high bridge is a real treat!
	Jun 27, 2007 Day 8 Kingston NY to Jersey City NJ DT 6.1 hr  TF 57.6 gal  Heading down river we pass Newburgh. There are places to stop and eat here, but we are making a long run today and do not stop. This was a very long day, and convinced us that hard riding for long periods of time is not our style.
	West Point.  Yes, it is VERY impressive.

	We came down river and turned in around that tall building on the left (Goldman Sachs).  Liberty Landing Marina is to the right, but any casual food is on the left.  The taxi across the fairway is $1.
	The taxi looks kind of folksy, but inside it is strictly high tech.  To cross the fairway is a $1, but to cross the river is $5.  Cool thing is, to come back across the fairway, you have to take the ride across the Hudson and back.  (Still $1!)
	There are some serious boats here. Construction in the background is a new marina building.
	You can just see our boat between the boat on the fuel dock and the edge of the building.  We had a great slip where we could see a lot of the big boats come and go.  If you have driven in NJ you know that they will not let you pump gas into your own car.  At this marina, we found the only self service marine fuel pump we have ever seen. Pump your own!

	What do you do when your boat gets dirty?  Yeah, the owner of the boat on the right was moving his stuff to his new boat on the left.

	Jun 28, 2007 Day 9 Jersey City NJ to Northport LI NY DT 4.4 hr  TF 79.1 gal  Looking up at the clubhouse at Britannia Yachting Center, Northport. The water looks shallow on the chart coming in, but it is just fine (we draw 4ft).  As you approach the marina there is a tight turn and you MUST stay between the docks and the buoy. Just follow directions and it is ok.

	Jun 29, 2007 Day 10 Northport LI NY to Mattituck LI NY DT 5.2 hr  TF 106.2 gal Despite the many homes of the rich and famous, Northport has quite a fishing fleet also.
	Seymour's is another popular spot for transients.
	If you boat in this area, the four stacks are a terrific landmark.  They can be seen from the CT side of Long Island Sound.
	The pace is slower at Mattituck.  There are few places to stay as you move eastward on the north shore of Long Island.  Mattituck is a real jewel.  The fishing fleet is at the mouth of the creek, and pleasure boats abound as you move inward.

	Dinghy over to the town dock and you can walk to town. (We walked from Matt-a-Mar into town, it is not far).

	Our last night out was cause enough for celebration.
